If your cabinet is bare wood, simply apply the stain with a brush (I like to use a foam brush), and then wipe off the excess.
If your cabinet already has a finish on it, you will need to sand it down to the bare wood, and then apply the stain as described above.
If your cabinet already has a finish on it, and you don't want to go to the trouble of sanding it down to the bare wood and using standard stain, you can sand it just enough to give it some ';tooth'; and to even out any rough spots, and then apply gel stain. Use a foam brush to apply it. It goes on like paint. It takes a while to dry (maybe up to two days, depending on the humidity in your area), but will look just like stained wood when you're finished.
