Well it is always pictures that make people realize what is going on in the world since it is proof and something they can see for themselves. I dont know about your community but if you just took pictures of things happening (such as a homeless guy with a sign, flood/hurricane/tornado damage, poor children, litter, oil in a river, etc) and post them somewhere public, people would be more willing to be active to donate their time and money to help those causes.
You could do photo journalism. Think of all the photos that you have seen in newspapers and magazines that have changed your mind about a subject or impacted you.
