What are diminished and augmented chords? and how can you apply them to a bass guitar?

I was looking at some sheet music which contained weird chords that I didn't understand and I talked to someone who told me they were diminished and augmented chords. Are there even such chords for a bass? What are diminished and augmented chords? and how can you apply them to a bass guitar?
Chords are a combination of three notes / they become 4 note chords when you ad an extra note to the 3 note chord to make the chord into a 6th chord / 7th chord / or a Diminished chord, or Augmented chord.

To understand the layout of the various types of chords, start with a keyboard in front of you.

I use a Pointer System to explain:

C chord = Left index finger on C - place the thumb 4 notes above the C (counting black and white notes) =E / place the Baby finger 5 notes down from the C (still counting Black and White notes) = G

To Make this chord an augmented chord / place your baby finger only 4 notes down from C still maintaining the C and E

This Augmented chord will look like this G# - C - E

To make the C chord Diminished make your regular C chord - G - C - E. / then drop your Thumb and baby finger 1 note down = F# - C - D# and add the A note and you have made the Chord C Diminished = F# - A - C - D#

When you are accompanying a song / using the pointer system of note identification. your alternating base notes for a C chord would be C and G (your pointer finger and baby finger) and you could add any note within that chord to make your backing a little more colorful.

These are the chord progressions in the C chord ='; C Major chord - C minor - C 6th - C 7th - C Augmented - C Diminished';

This formula works for any note that you place your Left Index finger on. C = C Chord / F = Fchord = Etc.

Go to your local music store and ask for a pointer book or chord system.

Good Luck. What are diminished and augmented chords? and how can you apply them to a bass guitar?
You can play chords on bass guitar. Good bass players do it all the time. For info about the theory just type in the name of the chord on your search engine and all kinds of things will come up. To apply that knowledge talk to other bass players or an instructor. They also have magazines for bass players that are full of more of this stuff than you can absorb in years. Music played on any instrument is only limited by your imagination. Ignore negative info that people try to feed you.
the bass guitar only plays one note - not chords

it can play the ROOT of the chord

G chord is the G

G chord first inversion is B

G chord second inversion is D

all the best
